Booking online? Choose whether you are a new or existing patient, then Wisdom Tooth Consultation.

Quality Dental Care in Sinnamon Park offers a complimentary wisdom teeth consult for new and existing patients. One of our dentists checks your wisdom teeth and takes the X-ray they need, a panoramic OPG or a 3D cone beam scan, on our own scanner. If removal is recommended, it can be done here in the clinic, with IV sedation available, and you’ll get an estimate first.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through, usually between the ages of 17 and 21, and there isn’t always room for them. So much of a wisdom tooth sits below the gum that an X-ray is the clearest way to see its position and roots.

What’s Included in Your Complimentary Consult?

  • Wisdom teeth examination: a check of your wisdom teeth, the teeth beside them and the gums around them.
  • OPG or 3D scan: a panoramic X-ray (OPG) or a 3D cone beam scan, whichever your dentist needs, taken on our own scanner.
  • Your X-ray, explained: we show you the images on screen and talk you through what they mean.
  • Clear next steps: if treatment is recommended, you get your options and an estimate before you decide.

Please note: wisdom teeth removal, IV sedation and any other treatment are not included in the complimentary consult. They are quoted separately, before anything is booked.

Your X-Ray, Taken and Explained in Our Clinic

There’s no need to visit a separate imaging centre. Our scanner is in the clinic, so the X-ray and the conversation happen at the same appointment. You can read more about it on our technology page.

  • Panoramic X-ray (OPG): shows all of your teeth and both jaws in one image, including where each wisdom tooth sits.
  • 3D cone beam scan: used when your dentist needs more detail, such as how close a tooth sits to nearby nerves and teeth.
  • On screen, in plain English: your dentist walks you through the images and answers your questions.
  • Included either way: whichever scan your dentist needs is part of the complimentary consult.

X-rays are only taken where your dentist considers them clinically appropriate.

If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain your options clearly and provide an estimate before any treatment is booked. There is no pressure to proceed on the day.

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Sinnamon Park

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If your dentist recommends removal, we’ll explain why, what’s involved and what it will cost.

  • Removal in our clinic: wisdom teeth removal is done here in Sinnamon Park by our dentists, under local anaesthetic. See how we approach tooth extraction.
  • IV sedation available: for longer treatment, or if you’d prefer to be more relaxed, IV sedation is provided in the clinic by Asleep Dentistry’s qualified specialist anaesthetists.
  • Referral when it’s the better option: if a tooth’s position means a specialist is more suitable, we’ll refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.
  • Aftercare: we go through how to look after the area before you leave. We usually suggest about 2 days of rest and can provide a medical certificate. If you get dry socket, the 15-minute appointment to manage it is at no charge.
  • Medicare: wisdom teeth removal isn’t covered by Medicare unless the patient is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
  • Estimate first: you’ll know the cost before you decide. We’re partnered with all health funds and claim on the spot with HICAPS.

Wisdom Teeth FAQs

Answers to the questions people ask most about wisdom teeth, their removal and recovery. Your dentist will talk you through what applies to you at your consult.

About wisdom teeth

At what age do wisdom teeth come through?
Wisdom teeth usually come through between the ages of 17 and 21. Some people never get them, some get fewer than four, and some have wisdom teeth that stay under the gum.
Do wisdom teeth always need to come out?
No. Many wisdom teeth come through straight and cause no problems. Your dentist will explain what the X-ray shows and whether removal, monitoring or another option is recommended.
What are common reasons to have wisdom teeth checked?
People often book a check for soreness or swelling at the back of the mouth, gum that keeps getting inflamed around a partly through tooth, food getting trapped, or crowding. Some wisdom teeth cause no symptoms at all, which is why an X-ray is so useful.
What happens if wisdom teeth aren’t removed?
Many are fine and simply need checking at your regular visits. Problems that can develop include repeated gum infections around the tooth, decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front, and, less often, cysts. These can appear at any age, so it’s worth keeping an eye on them.
Is 25 or 30 too old to have wisdom teeth removed?
No. Wisdom teeth can be removed at any adult age. As we get older the roots are fully formed and the bone is denser, so removal and healing can take a little longer. That’s one reason an early assessment helps if problems are likely.
What can I do instead of removing a wisdom tooth?
If a wisdom tooth isn’t causing problems, monitoring with regular check-ups and X-rays may be all that’s needed. Keeping the area clean helps, and your dentist can treat gum inflammation around the tooth. Removal is usually recommended only when there’s a clear reason.

Your complimentary consult and X‑ray

What happens at a wisdom teeth consult?
Your dentist checks your wisdom teeth and gums, takes the X-ray they need on our in-clinic scanner and shows you the images on screen. You’ll hear your options, including whether removal is recommended, and get an estimate for any treatment before you decide.
Is the wisdom teeth consult really complimentary?
Yes. The consult and the X-ray your dentist needs, an OPG or a 3D cone beam scan, are included at no cost. Any treatment, including removal and sedation, is quoted separately before it is booked. There is one complimentary consult per patient.
Who can book the complimentary consult?
New and existing patients of Quality Dental Care Sinnamon Park, with one complimentary consult per patient. You don’t need a referral to book.
Which X-ray will I have?
Your dentist chooses the X-ray that gives them the information they need: a panoramic X-ray (OPG), or a 3D cone beam scan when more detail is needed. Either one is included, and both are taken here in the clinic.
What does an OPG show?
An OPG is a panoramic X-ray of the whole jaw. It shows all of your teeth in one image, including the position of each wisdom tooth, the bone around it and the teeth beside it.

Cost, Medicare and health funds

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost?
It depends on how many teeth need to come out, where they sit and whether you choose IV sedation, so there isn’t one set price. After your X-ray you’ll get an estimate before anything is booked, so you can check your rebate with your health fund.
Is wisdom teeth removal covered by Medicare?
Medicare doesn’t cover wisdom teeth removal at a dental clinic unless the patient is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). Private health insurance with extras or dental cover may contribute, and we can claim on the spot with HICAPS.
Do you accept health funds?
Yes. We’re partnered with all health funds and can claim on the spot with HICAPS, so you only pay the gap. Your rebate depends on your level of extras cover.
Can I have all four wisdom teeth removed at once?
Often, yes, if your dentist thinks it’s suitable. Having them removed at one appointment means one recovery period, and one sedation if you choose IV sedation. Your estimate will show the options, and whether all four need to come out depends on what the X-ray shows.

The procedure and sedation

Is wisdom teeth removal painful?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so during removal you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal, and we’ll explain how to manage it. IV sedation is available if you’d prefer to be more relaxed.
Do I need an oral surgeon to remove my wisdom teeth?
Not always. Our dentists remove wisdom teeth here in Sinnamon Park under local anaesthetic. If a tooth’s position means a specialist is more suitable, we’ll refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.
Can I be sedated for wisdom teeth removal?
Yes. IV sedation is provided in the clinic by Asleep Dentistry’s qualified specialist anaesthetists. You stay conscious but deeply relaxed, with much less awareness of sights and sounds. We’ll explain the sedation fees before anything is booked.
Is wisdom teeth removal major surgery?
It’s a common procedure that is usually done in the dental chair under local anaesthetic. Like any procedure it carries some risk, which your dentist will explain beforehand. Teeth in a difficult position may be referred to an oral surgeon.
How long does wisdom teeth removal take?
It depends on how many teeth are being removed and how they sit in the jaw. A tooth that has fully come through is usually quicker to remove than one that is under the gum. Your dentist will give you an idea of the time at your consult.
What are the risks of wisdom teeth removal?
Swelling, soreness and some bleeding are common in the first days. Less common problems include dry socket and infection. Other risks depend on where each tooth sits, so your dentist will talk you through your own risks after examining you and reviewing your X-ray or 3D scan.
How do I prepare for wisdom teeth removal?
Plan a few quiet days and stock up on soft foods. If you’re having IV sedation, follow the fasting instructions you’re given and arrange for someone to take you home, as you can’t drive for at least 24 hours. Let us know about any medicines you take.

Recovery and aftercare

How long is recovery after wisdom teeth removal?
It depends on how many teeth are removed, but we usually suggest planning about 2 days of rest, which helps the area heal well. Most swelling and soreness settles over the first few days, and the gum keeps healing for a few weeks after that. We give you written aftercare instructions.
Why is day 3 often the worst after wisdom teeth removal?
Swelling usually peaks around day 2 or 3 and then starts to settle. If pain gets worse after day 3 or 4 instead of better, call us, as that can be a sign of dry socket.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket is delayed healing, when the blood clot in the socket is lost too early. It usually shows up 2 to 4 days after removal as pain that gets worse instead of better, and the risk is higher if you smoke. Before you leave, we go through how to avoid it, such as not smoking or using straws in the first days. If you do get dry socket after a removal with us, the 15-minute appointment to manage it is at no charge.
When can I go back to work or school?
We usually suggest about 2 days off to rest, depending on how many teeth are removed, and we can provide a medical certificate for work or study. After IV sedation, don’t drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for at least 24 hours.
What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?
Stick to soft foods that are cool or lukewarm for the first few days, such as yoghurt, soup that isn’t hot, mashed vegetables, eggs or smoothies eaten with a spoon. Avoid hot, crunchy, chewy or spicy foods and alcohol while you heal.
Will my face change after wisdom teeth removal?
Removing wisdom teeth doesn’t change the shape of your face. Some swelling for a few days is normal and settles as you heal.
